अपनी तकदीर के मालिक बनो, छत्तीसगढ़!

मेरे पिछले लेख से अब तक एक साल बीत चुका है। न लिख पाने के कारण प्रत्यक्ष रूप से दिखाई देते हैं।


पिछले ढाई सालों में मैंने लगातार दौरे किये हैं: लगभग दो हज़ार किलोमीटर की पदयात्राएं करी और दो लाख किलोमीटर से भी ज्यादा का दौरा गाड़ी से किया। इस दौरान चार हज़ार से भी ज्यादा छोटी-बड़ी जन सभाओं को संबोधित किया। छत्तीसगढ़ के प्रत्येक जिले व ब्लाक मुख्यालयों में कम से कम दो सौ बार गिरफ्तार हुआ, अश्रु-गैस और पानी की बौछारें छोड़ी गयी, लाठी चार्ज किया गया।

इन सब के ऊपर, १५ महीनों से मेरे साथ वैवाहिक बंधन में बंधी मेरी जीवन-संगिनी ऋचा को न केवल मेरी लगातार अनुपस्तिथि का सामना करना पड़ा है वरन जो सीमित मौकों पर मैं उनके साथ रहता हूँ, उन मौकों पर भी वैवाहिक जीवन के लिए जरुरी व्यक्तिगत समय में लगातार होती घुसपैठ से भी जूझना पड़ा है। ऋचा ने मेरी विवशता को समझते हुए अभी तक हर समय मुझे अपना पूर्ण सहयोग प्रदान किया है। मेरी नज़र में यह समतापमंडलीय सहिष्णुता ही उनकी सबसे बड़ी विशेषता है जो वाकई काबिलेतारीफ है। ऋचा के द्वारा मुझे मिलने वाले निरंतर सहयोग के लिए मैं उनका दिल से आभारी हूँ। मैं स्वयं को बहुत ही भाग्यशाली समझता हूँ एवं ईश्वर को धन्यवाद देता हूँ कि मुझे ऋचा के रूप में ऐसी अद्भुत, जिम्मेदार और विनम्र स्वभाव वाली सर्व-गुण संपन्न पत्नी मिली है।

राजनीति, मेरी नज़र में, व्यक्तियों पर केन्द्रित न होकर मुद्दों पर केन्द्रित होनी चाहिए- विशेषकर ऐसे मुद्दे जिनका सीधा-सीधा  असर जनता पर पड़ता है।  जैसे राज्य सरकार का:
i . शक्तिशाली औद्योगिक दल्गोष्टों के दबाव में आकर लोगों को अपने घरों से बेदखल कर देना;
ii . लोगों के जीवन के अधिकार की रक्षा करने में नाकाम होना- यहाँ मै निम्नलिखित तीन अधिकारों की बात कर रहा हूँ: 
अ. स्वयं की प्राण रक्षा का अधिकार;  
ब. दूसरे के द्वारा स्वयं का लगातार बलात्कार न होने का अधिकार;  
स. जहरीली हवा व पानी से स्वयं की मौत न होने का अधिकार;
iii. जनता को मूर्ख समझकर उनके साथ बार - बार विश्वासघात करना;
iv. ढिठाई से अवैध वसूली में लग जाना और राजकीय कोष को लूट लेना;
v. पूर्वजों द्वारा चिरकाल से सावधानीपूर्वक  सहेज कर रखी गयी  प्रदेश की भूमि और उसकी प्राकृतिक सम्पदा को बाहर वालों को कम दामों में बेच देना;
vi. जिन चीज़ों पर कोई शुल्क न होना चाहिए ऐसी चीज़ों पर यहाँ के रहवासियों को उनके वास्तविक मूल्य से भी ज्यादा की वसूली करना;
vii. जानबूझकर लोगों को अपनी पत्नी और परिवार को प्रताड़ित करने वाले शराबी में तब्दील कर देना।

मेरी नज़र में ये 'अस्तित्वात्मक मुद्दे' इस बात से कहीं ज्यादा महत्व रखते हैं की कौनसा व्यक्ति किस ओहदे पर बैठता है। 

मेरा मानना है कि यदि मैं छत्तीसगढ़ की जनता, विशेषकर इसके युवाओं, में ऐसी जागरूकता ला सकूँ जिससे वे अपने प्रारब्ध को हासिल करने के लिए उठ सकें, तो मैं समझूंगा की मेरी राजनीति अपने लक्ष्य में सफल रही।

Carpe Diem, Chhattisgarh!

It’s been a year since my last post. The reasons are obvious.

During the last 2½ years, I’ve been travelling relentlessly, by foot (almost 2000 kilometers) and by car (more than 200,000 kilometers). I’ve addressed more than 4000 public meetings, both large and small. I’ve been arrested, tear-gassed, water-cannoned and baton-charged at least 200 times in every district and block headquarters of Chhattisgarh.

And to top it all, Richa, my poor wife of fifteen months- whose greatest attribute, according to me, has been her stratospheric tolerance- has not only had to put up with my constant absences but also the increasing invasions of our fast-shrinking marital space on the rare occasions that I’m around.

Politics, for me, isn’t so much about persons as it is about issues. In particular, those issues that affect citizens most directly: like when the state uproots them from their homes and hearths at the behest of powerful industrial lobbies; when it fails to protect their right to life- their right not to get killed, their right not to get raped repeatedly, their right not to die of poisonous air and water; when it time and again betrays their faith, taking them for fools; when it brazenly turns into an extortionist and a robber of the state-exchequer; when it under-sells to outsiders the land and its untold natural wealth, which their ancestors had so carefully preserved for them since time immemorial; when it over-charges them for things they shouldn’t have to pay for at all; when it willfully tries to turn an entire people into a generation of wife-beating drunks. To me, these ‘existential issues’ are infinitely more important than who occupies what position.

If I can, in some small way, contribute to an Awakening whereby the people of Chhattisgarh, especially its Youth, rise up to take charge of their destinies, I think my politics would have served its purpose.

Asia's first robotic walk: A few small steps for Papa, one giant leap for the people of Chhattisgarh!

चलने की सरल प्रक्रिया- पैरों को एक के बाद उठाना ताकि शरीर को आगे बढ़ाया जा सके- उनके लिए अनगिनत अधिक महत्त्व रखता है जो कि, मेरे पिता अजीत जोगी जी के शब्दों में, "पिछले आठ सालों से किसी से आँखों में आँख डालकर बात नहीं कर सका" क्योंकि वो एक व्हीलचैर में बंध गया था. "अब, अंततः," वो कहते हैं, "कि मैं लोगों से आँखें मिलाकर बात कर सकूंगा."

ये विडियो क्लिप पापा को न्यू ज़ीलैंड की एक कंपनी रेक्स बायोनिक्स द्वारा निर्मित रोबोटिक पैर (इ-लेग्स) के जरिए चलते हुए दिखाता है. जब कंपनी उनके लिए ऐसे इ-लेग्स का लगभग दो महीनों बाद निर्माण कर लेगी, तो वे दुनिया के चौथे- और एशिया के पहले- इ-लेग्स इस्तेमाल करने वाले व्यक्ति बन जायेंगे. उन्हें उम्मीद है कि इस तकनीकी क्रांति के चलते बहुत जल्द ही व्हीलचैर अतीत की चीज़ बन जाएगा.

हमारे परिवार और शुभ-चिंतकों के लिए आज- १७ मार्च २०१२- ज़िन्दगी का सबसे ज्यादा ख़ुशी का दिन बन गया है: पापा अकेले नहीं हैं जो नौंवे आसमान पर हैं!

The simple act of walking- lifting one's feet, one at a time, to propel one's body forward- assumes infinitely greater significance for someone who has, to use my father Mr. Ajit Jogi’s words, "not been able to make eye-contact with anyone for eight long years" because of having been straddled to a wheelchair. "Now, finally," he says, "I am able to look people in the eye when I talk to them."

This video-clip shows Papa taking his first steps in Mumbai using a robotic exoskeleton (called e-legs) developed by Rex Bionics, a New Zealand-based company. When his e-leg has been customized (in another 2 months or so), he would become the company's fourth e-leg user in the world (the other three being from the US, Canada and New Zealand)- and it is his fervent hope and desire that continuing advancements in technology would make wheelchairs a thing of the past.

Speaking for our family and well-wishers, today- 17th March 2012- has been, without doubt, the happiest, most momentous day of our lives: Papa is not the only one in Ninth Heaven!

Reliving Tendukheda

शीशे का बदन था, पहाड़ों का सफ़र था
घर आ गया हूँ, आपकी दुआओं का असर था

I’ve read Le Bon’s fascinating treatise on mob mentality (La psychologie des foules). Last night, I lived it: on my way to Jabalpur from Mehaka, the farthest outpost of Jabera cut-off from the rest of this assembly constituency by incessant rains and floods, I stopped to have tea at a Congressman and former Nagar Panchayat president, Ramkumar Sahu’s home at Tendukheda; half an hour later, at about 9 pm, when we were about to drive off, a mob of about 200 armed hoodlums, led by Vinod Gotia, the BJP’s state vice president, and Ujiyar Singh, brother of BJP candidate Dashrath Singh, forcibly entered Mr Sahu's house, stoned our car, dragged us out, and beat us mercilessly till we lost consciousness. (Frankly, they could have done a lot worse, especially given the fact that we were totally defenseless and offered relatively no resistance: in that sense, at least, I am grateful to the mob that they- it- didn't go any further.)

Swatantra Agrawal, a close friend of the family, received heavy blows all over his back while bravely defending me from the assailants; Sandeep Sahu, the PYC state general secretary, sustained serious head injuries, and has partially lost hearing in his left ear (even so, he is more scared about what his wife, Seema, would do to him!); Anil Chouhan, my PSO (personal security officer), had his weapon, a pistol, snatched from the mob before he could do anything; Pratap Singh Lodhi and Sachin Yadav, two local Congress leaders, were, I am told, also beaten rather badly.

Mr Sahu’s home, where this incident took place, is less than 50 metres from the local police station. Despite repeated calls, no one came to our rescue. In fact, later at the police station, when Anil complained about the mob having taken away his pistol, the local SDOP, a certain Mr Tiwari, retrieved it in less than 5 minutes; we also heard him receive telephonic instructions from his superior, the SP of Damoh, to ensure that FIR is lodged against us as well (apparently, in the regime of Shivraj Singh, MP’s chief minister, getting beaten is also an offense): to my mind, this is as good a proof of police complicity as any.

Lying here in my bed in room 286 at the Dr Rajendra Prasad Eye Centre at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), fully conscious for the first time since last night’s incident, I cannot help but recall that this is not the first time I’ve witnessed the BJP resort to violence to brutally crush all opposition for the purpose of electoral gain: Dilip Singh Judeo, BJP MP, did it to Shailesh Nitin Trivedi, my father’s then-Political Secretary, on the eve of polling for Bilaspur Lok Sabha (April 2009); Kedar Kashyap, BJP minister, did it to Pappu Tiwari, a dhaba owner in Bhanpuri, on the eve of polling for Bastar Lok Sabha bye-election (May 2011). In both cases, the police turned a blind-eye- before, during and after the incidents. I have little doubt that this time would be any different.

In fact, the way I see it- unfortunately, now, with only my left-eye!- things are going to get a lot worse before they start to get better. My only hope is that the people of Jabera, when they rise to go to vote this morning, will not succumb to the BJP's terror tactics; that they will see it for what it really is, a neo-fascist outfit out to manipulate people’s mind with all sorts of lies and cheap-tricks; and that, when all is said and done, truth and justice- and tolerance- will prevail. For that is precisely what my late Mamu (Mummy's kid-brother), Ratnesh Solomon, who served this constituency with all this heart, mind and soul for the past 30 years, stood for.

With that happy thought, I shall now lie down, to let the painkillers take their affect.

Arrest at Hati on way to Taraimar

I am under arrest: the state administration is of the opinion that my going to attend the Public Hearing at Taraimar (Dharamjaigarh) would disrupt local peace. What will NOT, in its opinion, disrupt local peace is the forceful uprooting of 40000 persons, mostly tribals and Bangladeshi-refugees, from their lands and homes to make way for Vedanta company to mine 800 million tons of coal for two new power plants it intends to set up in adjacent Korba. Already, the agents of Vedanta have begun forcing tribals into selling their lands for as little as Rs 15000/acre; those that have resisted so far will be left with no option after tomorrow's public hearing. Precious forests and wildlife will be lost forever...There are only two lines in Vedanta's 80-page proposal about what it intends to do with the 9000 families it will displace: "they will be rehabilitated in a condition better than their present lot." There is, however, not one word about where, when and how this rehabilitation is to be done. Its environmental assessment report is based on what can at best be described as figments of some very fertile imagination...This is precisely what I- and several others like me- had intended to ask at tomorrow's public hearing. Sadly, these questions will remain unanswered. The Peace that Dr. Raman Singh- no doubt, acting as an agent for Mr. Anil Agrawal (the London-based proprietor of Vedanta)- so fiercely wants will come at the cost of erasure of an entire peoples and their way of life...

A Star is Born: Anuj Sharma

In 2000, my mother took me to watch “Mor Chhaiyyan Bhuiyyan”; most of the film’s cast and crew were present. Afterwards, we invited them home for tea. But the person I most wanted to meet was absent. I didn’t know his name back then. So, when I met the producers, I asked them “where is the guy, the naughty younger brother Kartik, who lit up the screen every time he was on it; the one who had the audience going gaga…” Before I could finish describing him, they proclaimed his name: Anuj.

A lot has happened during the last decade. Chhollywood, Chhattisgarh’s still-nascent film industry, has gone through a definitive cycle of Rise, Fall and Rebirth. There has however remained one constant: the ever-increasing endearment of Anuj Sharma to the people that speak and sing in his dialect, share his on-screen life, and hope someday to emulate his off-screen Rags to Riches story. I have personally borne witness to this phenomenon on countless occasions, not just when he is performing on-stage but also when we are doing simple everyday things like going for a drive, or having an ice cream or watching a movie. People, especially those one doesn’t generally take note of- the doorman, the auto-rickshaw driver, the maid, the quintessential ‘have-not’- seem to materialize out of nowhere just to shake hands with him, to touch him. And boy, does he touch them- not just physically (something his numerous heroines, no doubt, would vouch for!) but also, much more significantly, at a deeper emotional, ethereal level. This fact didn’t escape The Sunday Times of India when it recently did a one-page cover story on Anuj.

I am not a film critic. But Anuj comes across as something of a Chhattisgarhi Brando: even at his quietest moments, he simmers and sizzles; he is both Chocolaty Romantic Hero and Angry Young Man, all rolled into one. Trade-wise, he remains Chhattisgarh’s most bankable star: 9 out of the state’s 10 biggest-grossing films have Anuj as their lead and not one film has celebrated its Silver Jubilee which didn’t have him in it. To say the least, his producers are never disappointed. His foray into television led to the most-watched show ever in Chhattisgarh’s history, Folk Jhama-jham, on ETV-Chhattisgarh. I’ve seen posters of Anuj’s films not just plastered all over Chhattisgarh- more than any neta, in fact- but also in far-off corners of Bhagalpur (Bihar), where he is a household name. Professionally, he helped re-launch his bosom-friend, Prakash’s fledgling film career, when they made “Maya” (2010), the highest-grossing film in Chhattisgarh’s history. And once every year, he gives a free performance at his native town, Bhatapara, personally bearing all costs.

But the reason I’ve been asked to write this is not to narrate what everybody already knows about Anuj; it’s to tell what you don’t. For instance, he’s completely and totally devoted to his Amma, who raised him singlehandedly after his father passed away. (Amma is, by the way, the best Chhattisgarhi cook I know, and her jimikanda cooked in curd are to die for!) He loves his wife (whom he married out of love) and his newly arrived daughter, Anumita, who has brought him not only joy but also an unending string of hits! He is remarkably down-to-earth, and can keep smiling- not just with his lips, but with his eyes- for a longer time than anyone I know: at his wedding reception, his all-winning smile didn’t leave his face for 7 hours as he personally attended to several thousand guests!

I also know for a fact that he can sing better than he can act: every time Anuj sings, I can almost feel the divine. Also- and this is his big secret- he has ghostwritten tantalizing lyrics for some very titillating albeit hugely popular songs! (Bhoran debe ka, being one such number.) He also has his likes and dislikes, and in particular, one dislike: the shameless exploitation of Chhattisgarh’s immense cinematic talent by a clique of mindless cultural illiterates. That is perhaps why he was unanimously elected as President of our state’s Film Artistes’ Association: to protect, and if necessary, fight for their often-trampled Rights. Not surprisingly, UNICEF has chosen him as their Goodwill Ambassador for Chhattisgarh.

From there, it’s just a hop-skip-and-jump to Politics. Realizing his immense potential in public life, I’ve often tried to shamelessly lure him into this world, but Anuj hasn’t yielded. No yet, anyway!

Sanjeev Goes Sufi!

Sanjeev Shukla is the first elected state NSUI president of Chhattisgarh. Besides being a lawyer, he is also a singer and entertainer par excellence.

He was recently invited to preside over a Qawwali function at Kawardha in which quite a few notable sufi singers were to perform. Quite naturally the audience were more interested in listening to the music than in hearing politicians (Sanjeev included) make long, dull speeches.

Sanjeev therefore very wisely decided to desist from speechifying and instead donned his Sufi-singer's cap, going on to give a superb impromptu rendition of the popular sufi anthem, Piya Haji Ali. Needless to say, the mostly rural audience were thrilled- and the politicians saved from the inevitable jeering!

To me, Sanjeev- and several others like him- represent the emerging politicians of today's India. Read More (आगे और पढ़ें)......

Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Gold Medal

At the XVI Convocation of the Pandit Ravi Shankar Shukla University, Raipur, held on January 17, 2010, I was awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Gold Medal by the Governor of Chhattisgarh, HE Mr Ekkadu Srinivasan Lakshmi Narasimhan for securing the highest marks in LLB. Those present at the function included chief minister Dr Raman Singh, eminent astrophysicist Prof Dr Govind Swaroop, veteran politician and soon-to-be-published memoirist Mr VC Shukla, state ministers Mr Brijmohan Agrawal, Mr Rajesh Munat and Mr Hemchand Yadav, leader of opposition Mr Ravindra Choubey and Mayor of Raipur Mrs Kiranmayee Nayak. (As my parents were away in Kerala, the erudite Shailesh Nitin Trivedi (SNT) stood in as surrogate, along with Sanjeev Shukla, Brajesh Satpathy and Dr Bipin Kusulia!)

NOTICE: मेरी वकालत भली...

प्रदेश में युवा कांग्रेस के चुनाव होने जा रहे हैं. अपने चुनाव लड़ने की बातें मैंने अखबारों में पढ़ी. इन खबरों से मैंने तत्काल विनम्रतापूर्वक यह कहकर इनकार कर दिया था कि मैं अपने वकालत के व्यवसाय में आगे बढ़ना चाहता हूँ और मेरी अभी राजनीति में आने की कोई इच्छा नहीं है.

इस ब्लॉग के माध्यम से मैं इस बात को फिर से स्पष्ट कर देना चाहता हूँ.

राहुल जी की सोच है कि युवा वर्ग स्वयं अपने नेतृत्व का चयन लोकतांत्रिक प्रक्रिया से करे. मेरा भी यह मानना है कि चुनाव कौन लड़ेगा, इसका निर्णय बीजापुर से बलरामपुर तक के हमारे परिवार के युवा साथियों को लोकतांत्रिक तरीके से करना है; मैं खुद को ऊपर से थोपने में विश्वास नहीं रखता क्योंकि ऐसा करना हमारी पार्टी और राहुल जी के सिद्धांतों के विपरीत होगा. अभी हम सबका एकमात्र उद्देश्य यह होना चाहिए कि अधिक से अधिक युवा, खासकर दूरस्थ ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों के युवा कांग्रेस पार्टी- और राहुल जी- की सोच से सीधे जुड़ें.

वैसे भी इन चर्चाओं को सुनकर मेरे हाल ही में बने मुवक्किलों में काफी असमंजस की स्थिति होने लगी है, जिसका सीधा नुकसान मेरी व्यवसायिक संभावनाओं को उठाना पड़ रहा है!

इसी सन्दर्भ में मुझे यह भी बताते हुए बड़ी प्रसन्नता हो रही है कि परसों पंडित रविशंकर शुक्ल विश्वविद्यालय के वार्षिक दीक्षांत समारोह में विधि की परीक्षा में सर्वाधिक अंक प्राप्त करने के लिए मुझे स्वर्गीय राजीव गाँधी स्मृति स्वर्ण पदक दिया जाएगा. इस पदक से मेरे माता-पिता और मुझे मिलने वाली ख़ुशी किसी भी चुनावी जीत की ख़ुशी से कई गुना बढ़कर होगी.

AJIT JOGI AT THE LBSNAA, c. 1969

The Lal Bahadur Shashtri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), incubator of Union and Central services officers all across the nation and abroad, completed its 50th anniversary this year. A CD of archival photographs has been released to commemorate the occasion.

While browsing through the CD, I was pleasantly surprised to spot Papa in at least 5 of the 50 photos it contains. He was enrolled as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS)-trainee at the LBSNAA way back in 1969-70. And from what I've been told about him by his batchmates- including, most recently, His Excellency the Governor of Chhattisgarh, Mr Narasimhan- Papa was already showing symptoms of where he was headed: he made something of a record by serving three consecutive terms as President of the Academy's Mess Committee (the only elected office among trainees), topped his class in equestrian sports (horse riding, polo etc.) and shooting, and scandalized everybody by inviting the then very young- and if the photos are anything to go by, very pretty- Odissi danseuse, Ms. Sonal Mansingh, to dine at the high-table, which had thus far played host to only those above the age of 65. These photos, I believe, convey the joie de vivre of that time.

An Interview with An Advocate: एक वकील से साक्षात्कार

The Editorial Board of the daily, Chhattisgarh Watch, led by its erudite editor, Mr Ramavtar Tiwari, interviewed me recently on various aspects of my life. The interview was published in its edition of 6.10.2009. It is reproduced here with his very kind permission.

अमित जोगी का नाम एक समय खासा चर्चित रहा है. विवादों और संघर्षों का अमित के साथ चोली-दामन का साथ रहा है. एक समय वे प्रदेश में शक्ति के दूसरे केंद्र के रूप में जाने जाते थे. उस दौर में अमित की तूती बोलती थी, यह कहना गलत नहीं होगा. हालांकि इन बातों से वे इनकार भी करते हैं. श्री जोगी के पास स्पष्ट सोच है और वे अपनी बातों को बड़े सलीके से रखते हैं. "छत्तीसगढ़ वॉच" ने उनके जीवन के अलग-अलग पहलुओं को स्पर्श करने की कोशिश की है.

आप शादी कब कर रहे हैं?
नए जीवन की नई शुरुआत है. पहले इरादा सेटल होने का है. माता-पिता जब आदेश देंगे, शादी कर लेंगे. वे ही रिश्ता तय करेंगे. मेरा मानना है कि शादी दो विभिन्न परिवारों का सम्बन्ध है, जिसमे पहले बड़ों की सहमती होनी चाहिए. उसके बाद हमारी सहमती की बात आती है.

कैसी दुल्हन की कल्पना है?
घरेलू हो और माता-पिता की सेवा करे.

आपके आदर्श कौन हैं?
व्यक्तिगत जीवन में मेरे पिता जी ही मेरे आदर्श हैं. उनमें जबरदस्त विल-पॉवर है. उनसे मैं नीचे से ऊपर उठने की प्रेरणा प्राप्त करता हूँ. वैचारिक रूप से पंडित जवाहर लाल नेहरु मेरे आदर्श हैं. अनेकता में एकता की विचारधारा को उन्ही ने साकार किया है. देश स्वतंत्रता के पहले से ही अलग-अलग भाषा-बोली, वर्गों, वर्णों और क्षेत्रों में बंटा था. नेहरु जी ने ही सही मायनों में भारतीयता का निर्माण किया है.

पिता के किन गुणों से प्रभावित हैं?
पिता जी की दृढ़ इच्छा शक्ति से मैं बहुत प्रभावित हूँ. सोचता हूँ की वे इतनी शक्ति कहाँ से इकट्ठी करते हैं! वे प्रदेश की जनता से खुद को सीधा जुड़ा महसूस करते हैं. इसे मैं "excessive self identification" कहता हूँ. लोगों से सीधे तौर पर जुड़ने की यह प्रवृत्ति ही शायद उनकी इच्छा शक्ति बनती है. वे कहते भी हैं की मेरे दोनों पाँव नहीं है तो क्या हुआ, छत्तीसगढ़ की दो करोड़ जनता के चार करोड़ पाँव मेरे ही हैं. उन्हें ये ताकत जनता से मिलती है और मैं इन्ही बातों से प्रभावित हूँ.

पिता की लोकप्रियता के बारे में क्या कहते हैं?
छत्तीसगढ़ ने उन्हें बहुत प्यार दिया है.

आप भी लोकप्रिय हैं.
हो सकता है, लोग यह सोचते हैं, पर उनसे तुलना मैं नहीं कर सकता.

छत्तीसगढ़ से कांग्रेस क्यों उखड़ी?
उखड़ गई यह कहना ठीक नहीं है, यह कहना चाहिए की लड़खड़ा गई है. विशेष रूप से आदिवासी इलाकों में कांग्रेस संगठन से कमजोर है. कांग्रेस के ४ मोर्चा संगठनों की अपेक्षा RSS की ५७ संस्थाएं हैं जो इन इलाकों में गहरी पैठ बनाने में लगी हुई हैं. संकल्प कोचिंग, एकल विद्यालय, वनवासी कल्याण और वाल्मीकि आश्रम, और सरस्वती शिशु स्कूल आदि के माध्यम से वे लोग काम कर रहे हैं. वे २४ घंटे, सातों दिन और बारहों महीने सक्रीय हैं. लेकिन कांग्रेस के संगठन फील्ड में नहीं दिखते. फिर भी यह बात भी नकारी नहीं जा सकती कि कांग्रेस, और विशेषकर नेहरु-गांधी परिवार, का यहाँ आज भी प्रभाव है. पर हमारा संगठन इसका लाभ नहीं ले पा रहा है. कांग्रेस को संघ से सीखना पड़ेगा, काम करना पड़ेगा.

मेरा मानना है की कांग्रेस संगठन के रूप में कम, एक जनांदोलन के रूप में ज्यादा लोकप्रिय है. कांग्रेस अब फिर उठने की प्रक्रिया में चल पड़ी है, और राहुल जी इस अभियान के सूत्रधार के रूप में उभरे हैं. वे संगठन के ढाँचे को मजबूत करने में लगे हैं. पंजाब, उत्तराखंड, गुजरात, पुदुचेरी और छत्तीसगढ़ में युवा संगठनों के चुनाव नीचे स्थर से पूरी लोकतांत्रिक प्रक्रिया से हुए हैं. इस से पार्टी में आतंरिक लोकतंत्र आ रहा है. छत्तीसगढ़ में भी हाल ही में NSUI के चुनाव निर्वाचन पद्धति से संपन्न हुए हैं. सिर्फ ४० दिनों में ८०००० छात्र-सदस्य बनाए गए. इन छात्रों ने लगभग ४८०० प्रतिनिधियों का चयन किया, और उन्होनें जिला, प्रदेश और राष्ट्रीय स्थर पर अपने प्रतिनिधियों का चुनाव किया है. यह राहुल जी और कांग्रेस की एक बड़ी उपलब्धि है. इन सभी चुनावों को पार्टी ने नहीं बल्कि भारत के पूर्व मुख्य चुनाव आयुक्त, श्री लिंगदोह, की संस्था, FAME, ने करवाए. राहुल गाँधी का प्रयोग सफल रहा है.

कांग्रेस में गुटबाजी पर आप क्या कहेंगे?
कांग्रेस सिर्फ नेहरु-गाँधी परिवार के बैनर के तले है. कोई भी व्यक्ति का कोई गुट नहीं है. कांग्रेसजनों का वास्ता सिर्फ इस एक परिवार से है, और किसी से नहीं. वे ही सर्वोपरि हैं. पूरे देश में सिर्फ इस एक परिवार के प्रति जबरदस्त अपनत्व का भाव है. राहुल जी की सक्रियता से पार्टी में आंतरिक लोकतंत्र कायम होने की प्रक्रिया शुरू हो चुकी है. आतंरिक चुनावों से पार्टी मजबूत होगी. "Youth Transforming" (युवा परिवर्तन) अभियान के तहत आने वाले दो सालों में सभी प्रदेशों में चुनाव निपटा लिए जायेंगे. और जहाँ तक गुटबाजी का सवाल है तो मैं चाहूँगा कि यह ख़त्म हो. मैं समझता हूँ कि पार्टी में युवा नेतृत्व को, NSUI और युवा कांग्रेस के माध्यम से उभारने की जो कोशिश शुरू की है, उससे भी गुटबाजी पर रोक लगेगा.

आने वाले स्थानीय निकाय चुनावों के सन्दर्भ में क्या रणनीति होगी?
स्थानीय निकाय चुनाव में युवाओं को आगे आना होगा. इन चुनावों में पार्टी और मुद्दों की अपेक्षा व्यक्तिगत छवि ज्यादा मायने रखती है. लोग व्यक्ति देखकर वोट करते हैं, ऐसे लोगों को चुनते हैं जो उनके सुख-दुःख, दुःख-दर्द में शामिल होते हैं, जिनका सीधा सततः संपर्क उनसे होता है. (इस प्रसंग में अमित जोगी ने बृजमोहन अग्रवाल की व्यवहारिकता, मिलनसारिता की खूब तारीफ़ की. उन्होंने कहा कि श्री अग्रवाल न सिर्फ शादी-ब्याह के मौके पर उपस्थित रहते हैं बल्कि करनी-मरनी के मौके पर भी उपस्थित रहते हैं. चुनाव में पार्टी नहीं, बृजमोहन जी जीतते हैं.)

आखिर युवा आगे कैसे आयेंगे?
मेरी सोच है कि युवाओं को स्थानीय चुनाव में ज्यादा से ज्यादा मौका दिया जाना चाहिए. कांग्रेस में जीतने की क्षमता और युवा होना, चुनावों में मापदंड के रूप में अपनाए जाने चाहिए.

क्या युवाओं के लिए आरक्षण होगा?
ऐसा फिक्स नहीं है.

अजीत जोगी दुष्प्रचार के शिकार हुए हैं. क्या आप सहमत हैं?
राज्य बनने के बाद उन्हें प्रदेश का नेतृत्व मिला. तब तक प्रदेश पर कुछ लोगों का एकछत्र राज था. तमाम महत्वपूर्ण पदों में उनका दबदबा था. इस वर्ग में, "speaking class" में, अजीत जोगी जी की स्वीकार्यता नहीं बन पाई. विशेष रूप से राजधानी में.

जोगी जी पर तानाशाही के आरोप भी लगाये जाते रहे हैं. आप क्या सोचते हैं?
जोगी जी यह मानते हैं कि दो करोड़ छत्तीसगढ़ के वासी उनके साथ हैं. जनता से उनका यह प्रेम कभी-कभी कमजोरी भी बन जाता है. वे अन्याय को जब कभी व्यक्तिगत रूप से लेते हैं, और उस पर प्रतिक्रया व्यक्त करते हैं, तब लोग उन्हें हिटलर कह देते हैं. ठीक वैसे ही जब फ्रांस के सम्राट लुइ चौदह कहा करते थे, "l'etat c'est moi" (मैं राज्य हूँ). जोगी जी भी खुद को छत्तीसगढ़ से उतना ही जुड़ा महसूस करते हैं. लोग इस गहरे प्यार को दुसरे ढंग से देखते और समझते हैं. मैं तो मानता हूँ कि आज राजनीति में ध्यानचंद का ज़माना नहीं रह गया. इस डी से उस डी तक अकेले गेंद ले जाने का अब चलन नहीं है. छोटे-छोटे पास देने का ज़माना है. इसके लिए टीम वर्क जरूरी है. संतुलन, समन्वय और टीम वर्क होना चाहिए. सभी को महत्व देने की जरूरत है.

भाजपा और RSS के बारे में क्या विचार है?
संघ की सादगी ख़त्म हो गयी है. व्यक्तिवाद के सामने, संघ और भाजपा दोनों दब से गए हैं. ठाकरे जी जैसी सरलता और सादगी ख़त्म हो गई है. कहने का मतलब है, संघ और भाजपा विचारधारा से हटकर अब व्यक्ति-केन्द्रित ज्यादा हो रहे है.

कहा जाता है रमन सिंह के सौम्य चेहरे ने दुबारा भाजपा की वापसी की है.
मैंने पहले ही कहा है कि जोगी जी दुष्प्रचार का शिकार हुए हैं. फिर कारण चाहे जो भी हो, भाजपा को दुबारा जनादेश तो मिला है. जनादेश का मतलब सौ खून मुआफ!

अजीत जोगी और रमन सिंह में क्या अंतर है?
सिर्फ किस्मत का. रमन सिंह जी की तकदीर ज्यादा बुलंद है. कुछ पद राजनीति में ऐसे होते हैं, जैसे मुख्यमंत्री, प्रधानमंत्री और राष्ट्रपति, जो सिर्फ तकदीर से मिलते हैं. संघर्ष से विधायक, सांसद या फिर मंत्री तो बना जा सकता है, लेकिन प्रधानमंत्री-मुख्यमंत्री जैसे पदों के लिए भाग्य का सहारा भी जरूरी है. भाजपा में रमन सिंह जी से वरिष्ट, अनुभवी और ज्यादा संघर्षशील लोग हैं पर भाग्य ने उनका साथ नहीं दिया.

लोग कहते हैं कि जोगी परिवार के रणनीतिकार आप हैं. आप क्या कहते हैं?
मैं कांग्रेस का सदस्य हूँ. मरवाही का मतदाता हूँ. अन्य कांग्रेसजनों की तरह वे मेरे सुझावों को भी सुनते हैं.

लोग राजनीति को गन्दी कहते हैं. आपके क्या विचार हैं?
मैं ऐसा नहीं मानता. भारत चाणक्य का देश है. आज भी राजनीति के बहुत से नियम और नीतियाँ घोषित और अघोषित रूप से चाणक्य-विष्णुगुप्त-कौटिल्य की बताई हुई चल रही है. राजनीति को समाज सेवा से अलग रख कर देखे जाने कि जरूरत है. राजनीति परिवर्तन लाने का सबसे तेज और सशक्त माध्यम है.

क्या आप चुनाव लड़ना चाहते हैं?
राजनीति में जब भी आऊँगा, सार्वजनिक जनादेश लेकर ही आऊँगा. जनता की स्वीकृति अंतिम और अनिवार्य है.

आपकी महत्वाकान्शाएं क्या हैं?
महत्वाकान्शाएं तो बहुत थी, पर जेल से लौटने के बाद वे सारी ख़त्म हो गयी. कीमती कपडों, घड़ी और जूतों का शौक था, अब वह भी नहीं रहा. अब ऐसे मेहेंगे शौक पालने की आत्मा गवाही नहीं देती.

आपकी ज़िन्दगी का दुखद पल कौन सा है?
पिता जी की भयंकर दुर्घटना और मेरा जेल जाना. जेल में मैंने जिंदगी का पाठ पढ़ा है. दुखी को निकट से देखा, समझा. कुल मिलाकर जेल में मेरा दूसरा जन्म हुआ है.

क्या गुस्सा आता है?
अब काफी हद तक वो भी नियंत्रित हो गया है. जरूरी हुआ तो कुछ अत्यंत ही करीबी लोगों के सामने उजागर करता हूँ. मन में अब ऐसी भावना ही नहीं रही कि किसी पर गुस्सा करूं.

अपराध बढ़ रहे हैं, आप क्या सोचते हैं?
हर क्षेत्र में अपराध बढ़ा है. कानून-व्यवस्था और प्रशासन के अलावा और भी कारण हैं. अपराधियों के बरी हो जाने का दोष वकीलों को नहीं देना चाहिए. जो कोर्ट से बरी हो जाएँ, उन्हें निर्दोष मानना ही सभ्य व्यवहार है. कोर्ट के निर्णय से पहले ही फैसले न हों. हमारी न्याय-प्रणाली बहुत सुदृढ़ है, हमें उसपे भरोसा रखना चाहिए. अब तो त्वरित न्याय के लिए फास्ट ट्रैक कोर्ट बनाये जा रहे हैं, ग्राम अदालतों का गठन किया जा रहा है, कोर्ट के बाहर विवाद अनिवारण के तरीकों को कानूनी प्रोत्साहन मिल रहा है.

देश की न्याय-पध्दति सुस्त रफ़्तार है. आप क्या सहमत हैं?
चाहे जो हो, पर लोगों का भरोसा आज भी न्यायपालिका पर है. साधन की कमी न्याय में देरी की वजह है. देश की अदालतों में न्यायधीशों के हजारों पद आज भी रिक्त हैं. यह सरकार की जिम्मेदारी है कि इन पदों पर भरती प्रक्रिया शुरू हो, सक्षम लोगों का चयन हो. कोर्ट के समक्ष छोटे-मोटे विवादों की संख्या भी बढ़ी है. बहुत से ऐसे मामलों में लोक अदालतें कारगार हो सकती हैं.

बड़े बाप का बेटा होना कैसा लगता है?
लाभ है तो हानि भी है. मुझ पर आपराधिक मामला भी नहीं चलता. पर फिर लोगों का, विशेषकर से युवा वर्ग का, प्यार भी नहीं मिल पाता.

पहली कमाई का आपने क्या किया था?
पिता जी के हाथों में रख दिया. उनके चेहरे पर आये संतोष और गर्व के भाव देखकर बहुत ख़ुशी हुई थी. अब घर-खर्च में भी हिस्सेदारी निभाने लगा हूँ. बिजली और फोन का बिल का भुगतान मेरे हिस्से आ गया है.

आजकल आपके ब्लॉग में कोई नई बात नहीं आ रही है.
आजकल कोर्ट में ही व्यस्त हो गया हूँ. इसलिए बाकी गतिविधियों को ज्यादा समय नहीं दे पा रहा हूँ. जल्द ही ब्लॉग के लिए भी समय निकालने की कोशिश करूंगा.

सुना है आपने किताब भी लिखी है.
हाँ. जेल में चिंतन-मनन का मौका मिला. जेल डाईरी लिखी, जल्द ही छपेगी. इसमें जेल में मैंने जो देखा, जो महसूस किया, उसे इमानदारी से लिखा. इसके छपने के बाद हो सकता है कि बहुत से लोगों को अड़चन भी होगी. जेल में नाटक भी लिखा, और कविताएँ भी.

कोर्ट कि जिंदगी कैसी लग रही है?
रोज़गार के लिए मैंने वकालत को अपनाया है. इसलिए पूरी तन्मयता से वकालत कर रहा हूँ. पहले कानून मेरा पीछा करता था, अब मैं कानून का पीछा कर रहा हूँ. मुकद्दमे के दौरान, कठघरे में, ही मैं कानून की बहुत सी बारीकियों को जान सका. ये मेरी प्रैक्टिकल ट्रेनिंग थी. अब कोर्ट में जिरह-बहस के दौरान विशवास आता जा रहा है, सभी का सहयोग और आर्शीवाद भी मिल रहा है. वैसे वकालत मेरा पेशा है. हर वर्ग के, हर किस्म के क्लाइंट हैं. भाजपा के भी बहुत से लोग मेरे मुवक्किल हैं.

जसवंत सिंह की किताब पर आपके क्या विचार हैं?
इस किताब को मैं इतिहास मानता हूँ. ये एक शोध-परक पुस्तक है. इसे मैं आधे से ज्यादा पढ़ चुका हूँ. अडवाणी जी की आत्मकथा, My Country, My Life, भी पढ़ चूका हूँ. जसवंत सिंह जी के विचार अडवाणी जी से मेल खाते हैं.

त्यौहार कौन सा पसंद है?
होली, ईद और बड़ा दिन ख़ास तौर पर पसंद हैं. पर सभी त्यौहारों को मनाता हूँ. एक दिन का सांकेतिक रोजा रखता हूँ, जन्माष्टमी पर उपवास करता हूँ, पूरी आस्था से नवरात्रि, होली-दिवाली मनाता हूँ. मैंने प्रायः सभी धर्मों का अध्ययन किया है. सभी धर्मों के त्यौहार और सिद्धांत आपसी भाईचारे की सीख देते हैं. इसे धर्मशास्त्री गोल्डन रूल कहते हैं.

कैसा भोजन पसंद है?
लोग जिंदा रहने के लिए खाते हैं, और मैं खाने के लिए जिंदा हूँ! ("Il faut vivre pour manger et ne pas manger pour vivre": Moliere, Le Malade imaginaire) शाकाहारी और मासाहारी, दोनों का बराबर शौक है. मेरी भोजन-प्रियता देखकर पिता जी कई बार कहते हैं कि मेरी जिंदगी लंच और डिनर तक ही सीमित है. मेरी अपनी सोच है कि मैं खाने या नाश्ते की टेबल पर अपनी बात ज्यादा सही ढंग से रख सकता हूँ. आमने-सामने चर्चा यहीं अपनत्व भरे माहौल में ज्यादा आत्मीयता से होती है जबकि जनसभाओं में सीधा संवाद नहीं हो पाता. माइक के सामने खड़े होकर भाषण देने से संवाद कायम नहीं होता, एकालाप होता है. बोलना ख़त्म होते ही संपर्क टूट जाता है.

फिल्मे देखते हैं?
हाँ, मगर हिंदी के मुकाबले विदेशी फिल्मे ज्यादा देखता हूँ. नायिकाओं में वहीदा रहमान जी बेहद पसंद हैं, उनकी टाइमलेस ब्यूटी है. नायकों में बलराज साहनी जी और खलनायकों में अमरीश पूरी जी पसंदीदा कलाकार हैं.

इन दिनों आपके क्या शौक हैं?
लिखना और पेन्टिंग करना मुझे पसंद है.

अपनी विशेष उपलब्धि किसे मानते हैं?
अभी तक ऐसी कोई उपलब्धि नहीं है जो उल्लेखनीय हो.

A New Life

Tiger Tiger Burning Bright...

The last time we were in Kanha, the closest we came to spotting a tiger were a couple of pug-marks. This time however we got lucky when we least expected it: a Tigress very conveniently parked herself on the dirt-track, whereupon she proceeded to strike a number of rather 'sexy' poses for our viewing pleasure. This video- peppered with SNT's highly imaginative running-commentary- captures our excitement at making this totally unexpected discovery. The footage has been shot by Dr. Saibel Farishta.

Saibel on my Takhatpur Visit

Note: Dr. Saibel Farishta recently accompanied me to the final match of the district-level floodlight cricket tournament held at Takhatpur, a quaint little township some twenty kilometers from Bilaspur. He has put his observations on his blog, which I am reproducing here:

On 15th June 2008 - I had accompanied Mr Amit Jogi and Mr Shailesh Nitin Trivedi on a political visit to Takhatpur in Bilaspur district, where Mr Amit Jogi was invited as the Chief Guest in the closing ceremony of an annual Cricket Tounament Function. I was stunned to see the mind-blowing enthusiasm among the young Congress party supporters of Takhatpur. The customary felicitation ceremony was held on a cricket ground in the central part of the town, as the local Govt. authorities had refused the organizers another School Ground, where Dr Raman Singh was supposed to deliver speech during his 'Vikas/Vinash Yatra'.

On several occasions, Mr Amit Jogi's entourage was cheered and welcomed by a huge number of young Congress workers. A lot of people from the minority communities, esp. Muslims & Sikhs, were also seen welcoming Mr Amit Jogi.

Mr Amit Jogi, Mr Dharamjeet Singh and others briefly spoke to the audience. Amitji emphasized on the power of youth in today's politics and how Mr Rahul Gandhi was spearheading a campaign, to join & re-unite the country's youth in Congress Party. Amitji also disclosed that another budding & upcoming youth organisation - 'Aam Aadmi Ke Sipahi' had been formed by Rahul Gandhi, to connect with the common man's problems.

The Congress supporters thronged Mr Amit Jogi's car from all directions and the vehicle's doors were dented from outside.

There was an amazing atmosphere of 'Genuine Respect & Good will' for the Jogi family, as a whole. In between all of this - loud noise of a musical band, chanting of slogans, bursting of crackers, garlands and Congress flags - I was moved, when my eyes fell on some rurals, who just stood at a distance, far from the maddening crowd, with their hands joined, welcoming & staring at Mr Amit Jogi. Their eyes glittered with a ray of Hope for them & The Poor Man's Party - Congress.

A Day in the Life of Amit Jogi

People often ask me what I do for a living. This is what a typical work day looks like (thanks to SNT):

16th February, 2008
1100: 100th Anniversary of Christian Mela, Matkudeep (70 kms)
1200: Teravi function of Siyaram Kaushik's father, Bilha (30 kms)
1400: Anjor Singh's father's Dasgatr, Dalli Rajhara (70+90 kms)
1700: Dedication of Bajrang Bali temple, Parkhanda (Kurud) (90 kms+40 kms)
2100: Ankit Bagbahra's wedding, Raipur (40 kms)
2130: Prakash Pagaria's son's wedding, Raipur

On this day, for instance, we drove about 400 kms across four districts (Raipur, Bilaspur, Durg, Dhamtari) to attend 2 weddings and 2 funerals, & 2 public functions where I was required to make speeches. Not surprisingly, by the time we reached Parkhanda, we were already 4 hours late.

Most visits follow a pattern: you are welcomed to shouts of Zindabaad, drum beats and the lighting of fire-crackers, then you walk in a procession to the venue where they seat you on a stage, about 40-50 people- the notables of the village- garland you as people come to you with applications and other sorts of requests, then the speeches begin ending with yours, following which the organizers present you with a shawl or some such memento. After that- if you've still got time- you might be taken to the organizer's home for tea, snacks and a photo-session with his family and followers. This pattern, I believe, has endured unchanged from the days of Mahatma Gandhi, India's first mass-politician (if not before!).

The stage, for me, presents a dilemma: on the one hand, it does increase your visibility (i.e., even the back-standers can see you) but the flip-side is that it creates a 'distance' between the people seated on the ground and those atop the stage. That is why I make it a point to go through the crowd where it is at its thickest- shaking as many hands as I can while chatting with them randomly (specially the youth and children)- on my way to and from the stage. More than anything else, this last aspect tells me what I need to really know: to share in the lives- the joys and sufferings- of the people who've given my family so much love.

SNT's Holi Milan: I Dance!

SNT threw one helluva Holi party last evening. Anuj got his friend, Vivek Tank, the national award winning flutist, to perform for us; Amit Tiwari organized bhajias and thandai; and VN flew in some excellent kebabs from a joint in Mumbai. Needless to say, the occasion called for a certain amount of joie de vivre: in this clip, the youthful Dr. Farishta (Saibel's father) persuades me to dance.

Readers will note that despite my best efforts, I am no Travolta.
